THE BEST WEEKEND

For those of you who know me, you know that I am crazy about cows and when I meet another cow person, I'm in heaven. My husband and I were the weekend guests of the most gracious host I think I have ever known. Not only was John happy to share his lake house in Corsicana with us, but he shared his cattle, as well.

John has a very impressive selection of longhorn, a variety of colors, hide patterns, and different types of horns. Just two weeks ago, one of his Longhorns gave birth to identical twins...the 3rd set of Longhorn twins he has had on his ranch...as I understand, this is quite rare. In addition to a variety of cattle, he also has horses and two donkeys. This was my very first time to see donkeys up close and pet them, what sweet beautiful animals.

It rained almost the entire time we were there, but did let up a little in the afternoon for some plein air painting. Here we were guests in splendid cow heaven, enjoying ourselves immensely, and John surprised me by commissioning me to paint one of his longhorns...a weekend (for me) doesn't get better than that! :-)

Some things to note in the photos: this longhorn is called a tiger striped longhorn, back view of the lakehouse on Richland Chambers Lake, and me and my husband...check out my polka-dot rainboots...absolutely the best $25 I've ever spent!

Hi Angela,
That is a beautiful place. And I love the first cow picture. Are you going to paint that one?

What an amazing place! It's beautiful. I didn't realize longhorns came in such a variety of colors--or are they different types of cows? Your hubby must have been wishing he had a pair of cool boots, too. That's one soggy field. :-) Congrats on your commission. What a fun weekend.

I caught a glimpse of a longhorn during my recent trip. Even at passing it at 80 mph from several hundred feet away they were quite impressive!

WOW! Your very lucky I would love to paint one of those longhorns! Two weeks ago brought all the cows out into the fields again near me. I had missed them all over winter so I share your happiness;o)

Nancy - We took a couple hundred pictures of soggy, wet cows, and even though wet, they still look great! I'm not sure which one to paint; he did like his tiger-striped longhorns and I did, too.

Edward - It truly was a mini vacation. So much fun, until Jay found a copperhead while I was painting.

Liz - Before we left for the weekend, Jay grabbed his nasty "yard-work" tennis shoes, at least I looked good. :) Not only do longhorns come in different colors, but also different types of horns. I think he had 3 different types there. One of his newest longhorns is called a corkscrew horn, the horns stick straight out. In addition to being beautiful, it was incredibly comfortable; what great fun we had!

Sheila - I'm so glad you said that, they definitely are head turners!

Sam - And don't you know I thought about you last weekend; you would have LOVED it there...perhaps you should plan a Texas trip soon! We arrived in the dark that evening, imagine my surprise when I opened our bedroom shutters the next morning...cows right below us!!

Cows are great, and donkeys are even more so! In fact, all animals are terrific - hope to see some painted cows soon.

My whole life I have loved cows. I'm happy to finaly meet someone else that gets pleasure just from seeing them. I have a beautiful poster size photo I took in Scotland, he is a Scottish hairy cow, do you know them, I have it mounted in my living room. When I was in collage for Vet Med, I worked on the farm with the cattle and the calves would always come up and lick my knee caps. LOL

What a cool experience! Aren't Longhorns just other worldly ...enormous and Prehistoric looking? One of the great things about Texas...you don't have to drive very far to be time-warped back to the 1860's! Yee-Haw! Have a great time with that Commission, Cowgirl!
Thank ya, ma'am.

Angela, I am so attracted to paintings with cows in them, sometimes I think I'm nuts. But I grew up in West Texas, so it makes sense, I think. I love that I've found you, and look forward to seeing the longhorn paintings.
